Online Backup Reviews
Pros:
- Offers an unlimited storage plan for a low monthly fee
- Offers high quality customer support
- Online backup company has been in business for at least 5 years
- Offers a "Restore Wizard"
- Professional plan offers server backup
Cons:
- Only offers a yearly plan
- Does not offer a free personal storage account
Conclusion:
Carbonite is a great online backup service that offers unlimited storage for a low price. They even offer several comprehensive business plans if you need to back up more than just one computer. However, unlike many other online backup providers, Carbonite does not offer a free personal account; instead they have a 15-day free trial. Also, Carbonite charges annually rather than monthly, so you are required to pay for a full year of service in advance. We found Carbonite’s customer service to be of high quality and enjoyed their extended phone support hours.

We found IDrive to meet or exceed almost all of our Market Standard criteria, making it an excellent choice for those seeking an online backup service. IDrive offers a personal plan with up to 150 GB for $4.95 per month. They also offer several professional options that include additional features, such as server backup. We were also pleased with IDrive’s “Restore Wizard” that allows you to restore your files indefinitely for up to 30 previously saved versions.

Conclusion:
SugarSync met most of our features criteria, with pricing comparable to most other online backup services. SugarSync charges $4.95 a month for 30 GB of storage. SugarSync offers free phone customer support only to SugarSync for Business users and charges $99 a year for personal accounts. However, we found SugarSync to be incredibly easy to use, and they have several advanced features, including a “Restore Wizard” that allows you to restore lost files for an indefinite amount of time and a mobile phone app for iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android.

Conclusion:
The MozyHome plan met or exceeded most of our review criteria, including Mozy's pricing of 50 GB for $5.95 per month and 125 GB for $9.99 per month, which is less expensive than our Market Standard. However, Mozy lacks customer phone support for their MozyHome plans and a file sharing option. We liked that they allow you to save multiple versions of the same file and have a “Restore Wizard” that allows you to go back as far as 30 days to restore a lost file.

Conclusion:
ElephantDrive's online backup service is easy to use and offers several features, but we found their customer service to be lacking due to an absence of customer phone support for non-Enterprise plans. At $9.95 per month for 100 GB, Elephant Drive’s pricing is comparable to their competitors. We also liked that ElephantDrive offers file-sharing capability and that their professional plans allow you to back up a computer running a server operating system. With their “Restore Wizard,” you are able to restore any file you may have accidentally deleted.

Conclusion:
Backblaze is a great option for those who want a lot of storage at a low monthly cost but do not require many features offered by other online backup services. Backblaze’s monthly plan offers unlimited storage for only $5 per month. While they don’t offer a free account to test their service or a separate business plan option, Backblaze does have a “Restore Wizard” that will help you restore any files you may have accidentally deleted. They allow you to restore these files for an indefinite amount of time, which is helpful if you ever lose any critical files. However, they lack a phone customer support line.

With low quality customer service, no phone support and a slightly high monthly fee compared to other providers, Jungle Disk does not meet most of our Market Standard criteria. However, Jungle Disk does offer a couple of desirable features, including file-sharing capability and the ability to restore your files for an indefinite amount of time with all of their plans, as well as the option to back up your server with their professional plans.

We found IBackup to be expensive compared to other online backup services with the lowest plans starting at 10 GB for $9.95 per month. We liked that IBackup offers a “Restore Wizard” that can help you find lost files for an indefinite amount of time, file-sharing capability, and server backup for professional plans. However, IBackup had a couple of cons, such as the lack of a free account and a smartphone app, with their pricing being their biggest deterrent. We found their customer support to be above average.
